A figure 8 picks up the least of the room of any pattern. You can think of all the others as being just a figure 8 with various amounts of omni mixed in.

Unfortunately the bluegrassers seem more concerned with having the proper "traditional" image than with sound. Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons has become very common...
