One other thing came to mind...
My old SUBARU had a car radio which had a DIN connector which allowed a
"accessory" factory cassette player to be plugged into it. Inserting the
cassette changed the radio over via an internal relay.
I added a switch and a pair of RCA females to the front escutcheon of
the dash which allowed anything to be plugged into the radio. The line
level inputs accepted anything I put into them. Throwing the switch
changed the relay over through a dropping resistor to simulate a load.
It worked great until the car rusted away overnight. ( Or so it
seemed...)

I have a Magnavox portable CD player with a cassette adapter.
It works quite well. You'd think that the head-to-head
interface wouldn't produce very good sound, but the quality
obtained with it is remarkably better than that obtained
from playing a cassette.
