Does it solve the problem with slotted reels if you just don't use the slot, or is there still risk of damage due to tape conforming to the shape of the slot on the hub?

There are places around where you can purchase 2nd hand metal flanges and it may be worth your while looking locally as to what you can get. Good luck.
