Current digital audio technology provides Libraries and Archives with an
unprecedented opportunity to create, manage, preserve, and provide
access to audio content. This workshop will introduce participants to a
range of powerful, low-cost, easy-to-learn tools-from small portable
digital recorders (the replacement for that old cassette machine) to
assorted computer hardware and software that will help you to make the
fullest possible use of your audio assets. We will cover digital audio
best practices as defined by several archival and audio engineering
organizations, metadata for digital audio objects, file formats,
storage, playback, and delivery options.

Objectives:
* Acquire a basic knowledge of both analog and digital audio concepts
and terminology.
* Learn how digital audio is created, copied, edited, stored, and
delivered to the end user.
* Assess your institution's options for delivering audio to end users -
both in-house and over the Internet.
* Gain an understanding of administrative, descriptive, and
structural/technical metadata for digital audio.
* Learn where and how to keep up-to-date with developments in digital
audio best practices.
* Hear how various organizations are partnering to make their resources
available to a wider audience.

Presenter: Dave Nolan is the Audio Archivist at the 92nd Street Y in New
York City, where he is managing the digitization program for thousands
of hours of recordings made at the Y between 1949 and the present. He is
also a consultant for the audio digitization program at Poets House and
the coordinator of digital audio recording for the biennial People's
Poetry Gathering. Mr. Nolan was nominated for a Grammy award in 2003 as
the producer of Dylan Thomas: The Caedmon Collection for Harper Audio.
