It must be the centrifugal force.  Bigger and wider are easier.  And 
since it stretches a given frequency out over further distance, that 
should make it easier as well.  A (poor) analogy would be that the inner 
grooves of a stereo microgroove are like a winding mountain road (narrow 
and twisty) and the 78 is like a highway (wider and straighter).
