Re: [ARSCLIST] Fwd: [ARSCLIST] Dating LPs ?

As time and generations pass, a resource identifying first label of issue and relese dates will be come increasingly necessary. There is a forty to fifty year accumulation of LPs. Since swe are all part of the generation for whom they are a daily experience, we assume everyone knows and those that follow will always know the lore relating to them. But 50 years from know, who will remember if the Mercury, Golden Import or World Series release came first, perhaps had tube processing sound and was pressed on quite material? I'm already running into this with the small mono companies. And where did all tjose Mercury monos in the brown or green covers come from? Some came from U.S. Silvertones (the Enesco conducting sides). Are the performer names real on them? (not always.)

Now is the time to sum up.

Kurtz Myers "Index to Record Reviews" include his untanglings. The "Record Ratings" short version cover util c. 1956 (though it says later). The latter is around for c. $ 25, the former, 4 volumes at $ 500, the supplements $ 100-200 per volume. Or less, if you're lucky. It covers mostly classical releases.

Hi Blake:

You might try some university school of music libraries. Some of them might well have kept music-company release catalogs, or perhaps received a donation from a distributor or executive. These will have the information you're seeking. Schwann, as has been pointed out, is also the likely source.

I ask again, why is album release date particularly important? I would think session date/info is enough.

Thanks Don...

Not that I'm defending the response that was provided, I did neglect to note
in my original post that I am specifically speaking in terms of Classical
and Operatic recordings. [And a couple of _years_ of doing "Google
searches" hasn't provided links to public sites with the information that I
seek.

"Frankly," to use your word, I am equally aghast that you use the words
"laziness and stupidity" to characterize this request. It was clearly
sincere. If
you had this information to impart, fine. Do so in the spirit of helping
an
honest, genuine request for help and give collegial advice and assistance
to
someone who might not have known about the sources you cite.

Frankly,I am aghast at either the laziness,or stupidity of some
people. There have been price guides out there for about thirty five
years, and now with this here "series of tubes" thingy, the internets, and
all,you just need to do a simple Google, and you usually find out fairly
soon. Both Sides Now http://www.bsnpubs.com/discog.html is fairly accurate
for the bigger labels, but not so hot for indies. There are numerous collector
sites for budget classical of the 50s/early 60s,and for 50s/60s/70s
rock, from all over the world, that have ridiculously complete discographical
information, that I could never dream of putting together on my own.And there
are new sites coming online all the time, like one I discovered recently for
post-Shadows,pre-Beatles European/Asian guitar bands.Granted there are still
some unknown private-issue Lps,mostly, classical,as well as stuff like "The
Harlem Twisters"(Canadian),I have yet to find anything on,but there is very
little of this.Sheesh

I think the Schwann is as close as possible for what you're trying to do,
unless you can acquire old
sales catalogs, which I think would indicate exact release dates. I think
you'd have difficulty
finding those catalogs from back in ye dayes because there has been so
much M&A activity in the
record-company business. I notice CD reissues concentrate on recording
dates -- and sometimes rely
on less-than-reliable discography books. I'm not sure why the LP release
date is important enough to
go through the exercise of gathering the info.
