Re: [ARSCLIST] Multi format DVD/CD/SACD, etc Player

Hi Marcos:

With your Mac, make sure you're burning a real-deal ISO CDR, which might only allow 8-point-3 character file names. I think the ISO standard has evolved but some DVD players only want to see older-style ISO CDR media. I believe it's a limitation of their firmware, not the drive or laser, per se.

An update might be warranted.

I contacted the folks that sell the modified DVD players and they suggested I send them a DVD-R with the data in question, and they will try their various players. If nothing else, I am already impressed by their customer service.

I plan to mail them a DVD-R this as soon as I have a chance, and will inform on their report. Of course, I am not suggesting Mike should not try it and report back as well... ;-).

As an aside: My cheap Sony DVD player will not play MP3s burned in a Mac, which is rather frustrating.

Thank you for following up.

Hi Mike:

You're talking video. We're asking audio. Audio MP3. DVD-R burned full of MP3. Will it play audio MP3 off a DVD-R data disc? Marcos correctly pointed out that for some reason, most multi-format DVD players appear unable to do this. I have a theory why this might be so, but I might be wrong. It seems to me that a DVD drive wants to turn at 1x speed for DVD video. Further, it seems to me that 1x DVD speed is a data flow far above the data flow needed to play MP3 files. So my guess is that the drive can't stop and start for such little bursts as would come off a densely-packed DVD disc, but I might be way out in left field on that. I believe when a regular CDR or audio CD is put in one of these players, either a different laser is used or the laser re-focused for a less dense pack of data, but again I might be wrong.

Anyway, does your new player do what most others seem unable to do -- play AUDIO MP3 from a DATA DVDR disc?

Hi Mike:

I think the operative question from Marcos was, have you tested it with a DVDR full of MP3 files? Marcos is correct that my Toshiba and Marantz players will not play MP3's from a DVDR data disc, but they do fine with a CDR full of MP3.

I am routinely reading DVD-ROMs with AVI and MPG files using both ISO 9660 and UDF formats. With the one exception noted before (an oddball codec), all have read without trouble.
