The intersting thing is that monophonic recordings which include
an audible amount of "room echo" (which was generally avoided by
record companies!) have a certain stereo-like sense of sound
location, even though single-channel! My assumption is that the
human brain, given millions of year to learn the hard way,
eventually figured out that the echo of a sound...and its timing...
could be used to "figure out where the bear was!" After all, the
stakes were high...either you established where the bear was (and
ate him...)...or didn't, and HE ate YOU!
