A harsh reality lots of folks fail to understand is that hearing losses are
non-linear and can just as easily excaudate the impact of distortion
artifacts as hide them. I find my clients who have severe hearing damage
more sensitive to subtlety like different kinds of dither or the lack
thereof. Some have even called to ask about what turned out to be changes
I've made in CD burner speed and other factors that logically ought to make
no audible difference.
For this reason I go out of my way to make certain anything I do in
mastering is making a significant improvement in the subjective presentation
of a mix as opposed to a subtle one. To paraphrase a classic session
musician saying, I've always found "when in doubt, leave it out" is very
much the case with audio signal processing.
