On the Bill Cosby show, ... From what I was told, most radio station
wanted full-track reels each week but there were definitely 12" and
16" LPs (on vinyl with microgrooves) pressed too.
Not to conflate Cosby and Crosby further...but, I was told that at
least some of the Transcriptions (referred to as "ET"s for
"Electrical Transcriptions") of the CRosby show prior to the
1947-1948 season would be done on two discs, each covering a bit more
than half of the show. The really interesting part of this is that
the first disc would be done outside in and the second disc would be
done inside out -- or so I have been told.
The benefits of this were:
(a) That the (diameter) equalization (or lack thereof) would be the
same at the crossfade between the two discs (remember the overlap) and
(b) The best sound (at the largest diameter i.e. greatest groove
linear velocity) would be for the open and close of the show.
CRosby and Jack Mullin made this PARTIALLY obsolete for at least this
show on 1947 October 01 when "Philco Radio Time with Bing Crosby" was
first edited on magnetic tape. However, I have been told that the ABC
network still insisted on the actual air copy coming off ETs as they
didn't trust the tape splices to hold. I don't know how long that
practice continued, but the show was certainly syndicated on ETs for
a long time and Gonzaga University in Spokane has an almost complete
set. The Mullin family has another extensive set.
The original 1947-10-01 tape was in the Ampex Museum collection and
has since gone missing. However a few excellent copies were made at
Ampex in the late 1970s / early 1980s time frame. One of those copies
has been baked abd digitized at 96/24 -- and sounds absolutely amazing.
