----- Original Message ----- From: "David Lennick" <dlennick@xxxxxxxxxxxx>We're talking about a 1953 LP here, one that was probably cobbled together from tapes originally used for ten-inch releases and thus not all recorded at the same time or at the same speed. And actually, pitch accuracy went out the window when tape came in! Between Europe and the USA in the 50s there were wide fluctuations, with 75cm/s being played back at 30ips and any math teacher will tell you, 75cm does not equal 30". That's just ONE factor..lots of others, including variations in the size of the tape pack, variations in the old Ampex 300 etc.So the London Symphony Orchestra playing it somewhere between E and F is .. er.. aaaargh. Keep in mind that IN SPITE of the existence of mains-related synchronous motors...NOT all 78 masters were cut at exactly 78.26 (or its UK equivalent) r.p.m.!
Question...does this speed-related inaccuracy still survive for microgroove records...?!
