Re: [ARSCLIST] Shamrock 031 and Soft Binder Syndrome (Squeal)

Oh, I also opened up 4 or 5 sealed reels of 031 (in the darker green boxes) that I took from an estate sale, hoping they'd be good samples of sticky stuff. No way! Smooth back, black oxide, and all in perfect condition..not even flaking. And they were probably over 30 years old.

I'm surprised that stuff doesn't turn up in as bad shape as its 1-mil counterpart, and I certainly used a lot of it in the 70s. But then if the brown oxide stuff was available, I bought it because it was the "better" tape.

Once it finally turns cold, maybe I should put a Wollensak out in the garage?

Thanks, David!

Think I'll go into head assembly mode soon so I can try these %$#@ quarter-track mono 3.75 in/s Shamrock 031 tapes in the fridge. I've got one soaking there now.

I recall some of this stuff and/or Radio Shack SuperTape from the late 60s clogging heads and squealing when new.

Cheers,

Richard

Okay, finally found a sticky reel of 031! Yayyy! Mildewy, too. I had to check 3 before I found one that was sticky, all from the same period (early 80s) and all badly stored in cold and hot environments and in a basement fruit cellar noted for dampness. And only ONE out of 3 tapes was bad..and only mildly sticky at that. I'll send it along to Sarah.
