Because the sound may reflect what one's ancestors heard.

But why would anyone want to hear what our ancestors heard from a machine that was porbably incapable of reproducing all of the sound that had been recorded on the record in the first place?  Why not listen to as much as possible of what was actually placed onto the recording tablet?  In fact, you might ask any of your ancestors still around which they would prefer to hear, a srtachy stell needle that was digging into the grooves, or a light weight stylus that could pick up every nuance?
