Actually it depends on how you define "faithful reproduction." A lot of tube
designs from the '50s had significantly greater dynamic range if you measure
between subjectively unacceptable noise and subjectively unacceptable
distortion. Solid state was dramatically cheaper to build which led
manufacturers to cherry-pick and promote specifications that would obscure
the advantages of comparably priced tube gear.
That said, I think most contemporary tube designs are pretty bad.
