Re: [ARSCLIST] Jazz78 session dates

The 1944 date you guys suggest is the day immediately after Moe recorded his
folk bunch in c. 70 sides, the last day of a sequence of marathon sessions.
Not likely. Also, the master numbers fall into a wrong place.

It may have been Kirby's 1st post-ban recording. Not Moe's.

Betcha the union had paperwork for this session. And Moe had contracts with
all his main musicians. He seems to have always paid (or, at least,
incurred) royalties and this was part of the contract form, I'm told. They
didn't show up in the sparse group of papers in the Brooklyn basement where
that bunch of masters and mothers were found.

Though the union probably discarded them (Petrillo's instructions to his
home union, Chicago, were to destroy everything as soon as the IRS rules
allowed. I ran into this info when working on the CSO broadcasts.)

But- there's probably some dated trace of this in the ASCAP files if Kirby
used material registered with them. Has anyone looked there?

Steve

I remember having troubles with some of those dates as well. The Kirby album

liner says "first session since the ban". I just opened my copy of Delaunay
and
found a printout of a discussion of this matter on 78-L where Uncle Dave
Lewis
and yours truly suggested that 1944 is correct for the Kirby session, not
1945.
Apparently Kirby's band was in LA from late March 1945.
