Thanks for the advice, everyone.  It turned out that slowing it down
to 33 was enough to keep it from skipping.  The record was very
warped, particularly on the outer portion.  The tricky part was
determining exactly how much to pitch shift the imported sound to make
it sound like 78rpm again (up 15 semitones, in case anyone else is
curious).
