A lot of what you hear in supermarkets and K-Mart is from these guys:

They insert "commercials" for whatever is on sale in the store, a la the
old "Attention K-Mart shoppers..." announcements one used to hear "live"
over the Muzak...
Not sure how they handle the music licensing side of things...
