Do NOT use acetone!!! It will attack most solvent-based plastics. The solvents suitable for film cleaning should work well to remove adhesive. Kodak has a list of film-cleaning solvents on-line: http://www.kodak.com/country/US/en/motion/hse/solvent.jhtml Naphtha (lighter fluid) will usually work very well, but of course is very flammable.
