Re: food/beverage policies

The ARL survey that Wes referred to was initiated by my
director Jim Neal because we were reviewing the policy here
at Hopkins.  I agree with Wes, the policies were all over
the map from issuing tickets to miscreant soda drinkers to
allowing food and drink with little or no restriction.  The
new policy at Hopkins allows closed containers for the
public.  The closed containers will be sold and a goodly
number given away in conjunction with several open house
tours to highlight the new renovations in the library.  The
preservation committee is "stuffing" the containers with a
short message about the new food and drink policy.  The
other part of the policy is for staff and each department is
to set their own policy for non public areas with the
understanding that cleanliness is an important issue.  This
change from the "No Food and Drink" policy which was not
strictly enforced will be reviewed in 6 months to assess the
impact and/or success.
