Re: Deferred Binding
Forgive a delayed and unsatisfactory response to the query on
deferred binding.
I had wanted to check my references, but have been away from
the office and will be again. But there was a fairly recent
article in the Abbey Newsletter, as I remember, that reported
on a survey from the University of Kansas Libraries, I believe,
that compared conditions of hardback and softback volumes in the
collection. The condition survey, as I remember, checked on paper
condition and cover condition and leaf attachment; the main premise
of the article was that the unbound materials, surprisingly, held
up well, and were in no worse condition than the hardback volumes.
In a cursory examination of back issues, I have not found the particular
article, but I'm sure others can find it. I do have a photocopy of
it in another location, so contact me on or off list and I know I can
give an exact citation.
