Pres Photocopy Specs
I would be interested in receiving a copy of your specifications for
preservation photocopy work presented for bid to vendors.
We've had experience with ICI, Acme and Booklab. The ICI experience was
dismal (several volumes had to be re-done, one was sent back twice!!).
They claim they've straightened out their staffing problems since then
(4/96). Acme is near perfect with text volumes of non-folio size. They are
fairly quick too. But they couldn't quite do a perfect job on pieced
oversize plates. Seams were big and gluing was sloppy. Booklab is (so
far) the best, but most expensive. Booklab had a tangle of shipping
problems about 6 months ago--kept shipping us things meant for others. But
I agree about the quality, especially with pieced foldout plates and folio
volumes, they are good.
Seems to me there is a great need for bindery vendors to be able to do
folio books with many color plates--especially those that are not suitable
for replacement by film because of their fragility, ackwardness in
handling by a filmer, and film acceptability by patrons. Booklab at this
time seems to be the vendor capable of handling these. I would like to
know if there are other vendors.
