Hi--
(Please forgive any cross-posting--a similar message has been sent to
ConsDistList.)
Are there any small archives or libraries out there with effective
pollution monitoring measures in place? If so, I have a few brief
questions:
(Please feel free to respond to me directly at ajposey@xxxxxxxxxxxx)
1. What are they?
2. How much do they cost? (A lot more than temperature & humidity
monitoring? Less?)
3. How much do they tell you?
4. What sort of documentation do they generate? (Which you could show
to sceptics who don't think there is a problem.)
Is pollution monitoring felt to be a concern for small repositories? I
have recently been to one that has monitoring for toluene (not at the
Archives' request), but not for anything known to be hazardous to
records, nor for strong oxidizing or reducing agents in general.
(Toluene wouldn't be so bad for the ozone layer if it weren't so
chemically stable, so it probably isn't as serious a preservation
concern as some other pollutants.)
Thank you!
