Head, Collection Management Department
Columbia University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Head, Collection Management
Department. This newly defined position is responsible for
designing and implementing services to enable scholars to
gain ready access to research collections of 3 million
volumes, along with microforms and current periodicals,
housed in the Libraries' main facility, Butler Library, and
in off-site storage, including responsibility for
identifying and processing materials for binding and
preservation. The Head will provide leadership in
the areas of planning and design of Collection Management
services; developing service objectives; establishing
qualitative and quantitative performance measures; and
implementing effective and efficient policies and
procedures in support of the service commitments of the
department.
The Head, Collection Management Department will join the
Libraries at an exciting and critical time. Butler Library
is undergoing a major renovation that will reconfigure and
renovate its service facilities and upgrade its stacks. As
part of the renovation project, a merged periodicals and
microforms room will enable continued reconfiguration of
services. At the same time, we are constructing a major
new depository facility to consolidate and expand our
off-site storage capacity. We seek a department head who
can develop and maintain service standards and provide
leadership for user-centered services and ensure
quality-control in their delivery. Key objectives of the
position include designing, implementing and monitoring
workflows for collection management operations in Butler
Library and our offsite storage operations; and managing
collection measurement and layout, shelving, shifting,
shelf-reading, online check-in of material, bindery
preparation and preservation processing. The Head will
also design, implement and monitor services provided to
patrons using periodicals and microforms.
The Columbia University Libraries collections include 6.8
million volumes, 5.1 microforms and 200 million manuscripts
items served through 20 libraries. In addition to its
growing collections and rich array of traditional and
electronic information services, the Libraries has an
active digital library program. Reporting to the Director,
Access Services Division, the Head, Collection Management
Department will manage 25 FTE staff and 7 FTE student
assistants in Collection Maintenance, Stacks Maintenance,
Microforms Reading Room, Current Periodicals Reading Room,
and Off-Site Storage. The Head has responsibility for
planning and control of a student assistant budget;
monitoring replacement funds and rebinding funds; designing
Requests for Proposals, selecting vendors and approving
contract work; and making purchasing recommendations. The
Head will work and consult with colleagues in departments
of Reference, Circulation, Bibliographic Control, Technical
Support, Acquisitions, Preservation, History and Humanities
and Area Studies, and will participate in Libraries-wide
planning and policy development for collection management
services.
Requirements are: an accredited MLS or equivalent
combination of education and experience in a research
library setting; demonstrated ability to assess needs,
assign priorities, set goals and objectives, develop
strategies and evaluate outcomes; previous relevant
supervisory experience at a professional level, including
experience in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training
and performance appraisal; proven organizational,
analytical and quantitative skills; excellent oral and
written communication skills; ability to work effectively
with colleagues and users at all levels in a demanding
service environment; relevant experience with library
automation systems.
Salary ranges are: Librarian I: $37,500 - $46,875;
Librarian II: $40,000 - $54,000; Librarian III: $43,000
- $64,500. Excellent benefits include assistance with
