ACRL RBMS Manuscripts and Other Formats Discussion Group
Joint Meeting with
ALCTS PARS Photographs and Other Recording Media Discussion Group
Saturday, January 30, 1999, 2:00 - 4:00 P.M.
Philadelphia Convention Center 102B
AGENDA
This special joint meeting between an RBMS discussion group and a newly
forming PARS discussion group adresses an issue of overlapping interest --
the management, care, and handling of photographs and photographic
collections.
1. Introductions and general announcements: members will be asked to
introduce themselves and make a brief statement or query about photographs
in their collections.
2. Primary topic: Management, Care, and Handling of Photographs and
Photograph Collections -- ALA last met in Philadelphia during midwinter
1995 when George Brightbill (Temple University) spoke about
a regional survey of photograph collections in the greater Philadelphia
area. We revisit the "other format" of photographs in 1999. Our guest
speaker at this midwinter meeting is Jon Williams, Curator of Prints and
Photographs at the Hagley Museum and Library, in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Hagley Library <http://www.hagley.lib.de.us/> is well known
for archival records documenting American business, technology, and
industrial history. Its collections of still photography encompass more
than 1,000,000 images. Mr. Williams will lead a discussion on a
variety of management issues related to photographs and images, from
basic handling to digitization.
3. Housekeeping: A portion of the meeting will be reserved for the two
discussion groups to attend to their respective business. In particular,
the PARS Photographic and Recording Media discussion group will take
nominations for a new chair and vice-chair.
*****
The Manuscripts and Other Formats Discussion Group serves "as an open
forum for discussion about topics relating to manuscripts, archival
records, and other primary researcvh materials, usually in non-printed
formats, including but not limited to photographic material, artwork,
electronic records, and ephemera."
