"Tired of typing binding tickets?"
"Are you and your staff looking for a way to speed up the binding process?"
"Do you see too many spelling mistakes on the spines of your bound volumes?"
For years academic, public and special librarians involved in preservation
and technical services have been interested in finding ways to use
technology and automation to improve the quality and quantity of their
binding processes. Using computers and binding automation software programs
such as LARS and ABLE to store binding patterns, create binding histories
and produce binding slips has become, for many, commonplace in the 1990s.
Now, please join the Binding Automation Discussion Group (for time and
place, please see details below) as we meet for two demonstrations of the
next step in binding automation: Z39.50 driven interfaces between the
library OPAC and LARS or ABLE.
In a very simplified nutshell, Z39.50 is a 1995 ANSI/NISO standard that
allows your binding automation software to retrieve information about a
monographic volume directly from your OPAC. Using a Z39.50 driven
interface, LARS or ABLE can 'query' your library's OPAC about a specific
title and, once found, place the specific information it finds directly into
a binding ticket format with minimal human intervention. Two key benefits
of this process are the reduced chance for typographical errors and a
reduction in staff time spent on data entry.
The two hour meeting will consist of live demonstrations of two different
Z39.50 driven interfaces, one presented by Bill Dewitt of Heckman Library
Bindery and one presented by Barb Voyer of ICI, Inc. Both systems are
currently being used to produce binding tickets by libraries affiliated with
these companies. There will be handouts and both Barb and Bill will be
available for questions after the meeting.
