TITLE: Coordinator, Preservation Production Management
LOCATION: Preservation Department, Technical Services
Division, McKeldin Library
CATEGORY: Exempt Staff, Full Time (12 Month Appointment)
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
ENVIRONMENT: The Preservation Department has grown to
include a professional collections conservation program and
mass de-acidification initiative, in addition to ongoing
programs in brittle materials response, commercial bindery,
reformatting, and disaster salvage response. Members of
the Preservation Department not only are responsible for
meeting the preservation needs of the six libraries on
campus, but also participate in an environment that strives
to facilitate organizational communication and foster
shared responsibility.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages and supervises two high volume
production units within the Preservation Department - the
Bindery Unit and Mass Deacidification Initiative - with a
time-sensitive work-flow of nearly 40,000 pieces per year.
Provides organizational and procedural analysis to maximize
efficiency of workflow. Coordinates operations of
Production Units with the other units within the
Preservation Department. Coordinates communication, and
shipment and contract implementation with vendors, and has
budgetary responsibility over vendor invoices. Resolves
problems, and coordinates communication and shipments of
library materials with all internal customers throughout
all divisions of UM Libraries. Supervises staff and
students, with hiring, training, and performance review
responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Bachelor's degree from an
accredited institution. ALA-accredited Master's degree in
Library Science is desirable. EXPERIENCE: At least two
years experience managing a high production work flow,
preferably in a large library setting. At least two years
of experience supervising staff. Demonstrated ability to
analyze production-related issues and organize workflow to
maximize efficiency. Demonstrated ability to evaluate
automated systems in terms of their applications to bindery
and mass deacidification activities, and to incorporate
appropriate applications into workflow. Good oral and
written communication skills. Demonstrated ability in
problem solving, and in successful use of negotiation
skills including tact and persuasiveness. Demonstrated
ability to present data in easily comprehensible format
using appropriate software, including spreadsheets.
General understanding of book structures, commercial
bindery operations, and mass deacidification principles and
procedures.
BENEFITS: 22 days annual leave and 3 personal days; 14
