[PADG:1000] ALA program

The ALA/ALCTS/Preservation and Reformatting Section's Education Committee is
pleased to present the following program at the ALA annual meeting in
Chicago:

"Managing Preservation Technologies for the New Century"

Sunday, July 9, 2000, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Marriott Downtown-Chicago BR E

In 2020 will you read a book inscribed by an ion beam on an iridium pin
(HD-ROM)? Digital imaging currently offers tremendous opportunities for
providing access to information, and eventually standards will emerge for
using digitization as a preservation format. Other technologic advancements
are likely to emerge in the 21st century that will impact library services.
What will be the role of traditional library materials in the future, and
how will these affect preservation programs? Decisions we make today lay
the groundwork for tomorrow's challenges. Three experts discuss past,
present, and future realities and implications of various new and
traditional preservation technologies. Specific applications and projects
will provide librarians, managers, and anyone interested in digitization and
its effects on collections with valuable guidelines for making decisions
that will benefit their institutions. Kenneth Lavender, Curator, Rare Book
and Texana Collection, University of North Texas will moderate the program.

Featured Speakers:
"Technology and Preservation: Connections Past, Present and Future"
Paul Conway, Head, Preservation Department, Yale University

"Out There in the Field: Technologies for Every Library"
