   Type of Appointment:  Permanent Non-supervisory, bargaining unit
   position

   Number of Vacancies:   Three

   Brief description of duties:

   Incumbent at the GS-5 level will use an automated box-making
system
   to construct custom fitted enclosures for Library materials from
the
   permanent research collections; prepare materials for enclosure;
   removes materials from acid binders or containers and places them
in
   appropriate protective enclosures; perform basic repairs such as
   tipping-in or repair paper, using heat-set tissue or Japanese
paper,
   constructing pockets to house accompanying material or tightening
   hinges; assist in maintaining cleanliness and order in the repair
   facility; support the Library Binding Section by performing
   treatments such as stiffening and pamphlet binding; assure the
   physical safety of all Library materials assigned for repair or
   housing; work in a timely, accurate, and cost-effective manner;
   maintain worksheets on a daily basis; and participates in staff
   meetings, Library committees, or task forces. In addition to the
   duties listed above, incumbent at the GS-6 level will
independently
   search the Library's on-line and manual catalogs to verify entry
or
   call number; perform basic and intermediate repairs such as spine
   repair, recasing or new covers; handle RUSH requests; and perform
   quality assurance as batches of work are completed.  In addition,
   incumbent at the GS-7 level will organize teams of technicians to
   work in decentralized environments to accomplish housing projects
   for particular collections; produce statistics; develop creative
   solutions to non-routine problems; assist in making treatment
   decisions for housing and repair; assist in the examination of
   material to determine condition, develop treatment plans, and
   estimate cost of treatment; train other technicians; assists in
   conducting use surveys; perform quality assurance; and may be
   assigned to direct work flow for housing or repair activities.

   Minimum Qualifications:Applicants applying at the GS-5 level.
   Applicants must have at least 6 months of related specialized
   experience, equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service
or
   at a comparable level of difficulty outside the Federal service,
   performing duties such as general clerical, library or other
   experience which demonstrates experience in simple book repair or
   protective enclosure of library or archival materials or have
   successfully completed at least 4 years (120 semester/180 quarter
   hours) of undergraduate education, in an accredited college or
   university in any field of study; or have an equivalent
combination
   of related experience and education when combined is equivalent to
6
   months of related experience at the GS-4 level.

   Applicants applying at the GS-6 level. Applicants must have at
least
   6 months of related specialized experience, equivalent to the
GS-5
   level in the Federal service or at a comparable level of
difficulty
   outside the Federal service, performing duties such as leaf
repair,
   construction of pockets, paperback stiffening, hinge, tightening
or
   the construction of protective enclosures.

   Applicants applying at the GS-7 level.  Applicants must have at
   least 6 months of related specialized experience, equivalent to
the
   GS-6 level  in the Federal service or at a comparable level of
   difficulty outside the Federal service or at a comparable level
of
   difficulty outside the Federal service, performing duties such as
   recasing, spine repair, and use of an online bibliographic
system.

   Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):  The following KSAs have
   been identified as being important to the performance of this
   position at the GS- 5/6/7 grade levels.  The percentages in
   parenthesis indicate the relative importance of each KSA to this
   position.

       1.  Knowledge of book structure including methods of leaf
           attachments. (20%)

       2.  Ability to perform exacting hand work with care,
precision,
           patience, and attention to detail. (40%)

       3.  Knowledge of online bibliographic system to determine
proper
           bibliographic information for spine lettering and
labeling.
           (20%)

       4.  Ability to communicate and interact with others. (10%)
