"Digital Past, Digital Future: An Introduction to Digital Preservation"
Friday, June 15, 2001 from 1:00 to 3:30pm in Salon B at the Marriott

This symposium will define digital preservation, explain how preservation
risks and challenges are different for digital materials, and identify
preservation strategies and standards. Additionally, the importance of
metadata for preservation and access will be examined along with a
discussion of standards being developed for metadata. A case study will
illustrate how to provide access to digital materials and ensure their
long-term retention. Speakers will be Robin Dale, Program Officer, Research

Office, The British Library; Lydia Preiss, Manager, Collection Preservation,
National Library of Australia; and Stephen Chapman, Preservation Librarian
