[PADG:1671] Preconference on Planning for Disasters
ALCTS & LAMA to Cosponsor Preconference on Planning for Disasters
The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) and The
Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) will cosponsor
"Hell & High Water: Planning for Disasters" Preconference at the 2002 ALA
Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA. The Preconference will be held on
Thursday, June 13 from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday, June 14 from 8:00
a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Natural and manmade disasters occur without warning. During these times of
crisis, numerous decisions must be made in order to assess and control
damage to your building, your collections and possibly your staff and
patrons.
The ALCTS and LAMA's day and a half Preconference provides a framework for
creating and updating disaster plans. Components include developing a
written plan, collection and building damage assessment, continuing
services, public relations, staff relations and counseling, organizing
community resources, and more. Through case studies, real life situations
and simulated disasters, participants will learn how to keep their library
operational, even in the midst of a crisis.
Speakers include: Sue Kellerman, Head of Preservation Dept., Pennsylvania
State University; Lee B. Brawner, Former Executive Director, Metropolitan
Library System, Oklahoma City; Susan E. Parker, Associate Dean, University
Libraries, CSU Northridge; Peter Persic, Director of PR, Los Angeles Public
