The event will begin with the
presentation of the 2002 Justin Winsor Essay Prize award. This year?s
recipient is Marek Sroka, Assistant Professor of Library Administration
at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Library, for his article
?The Destruction of Jewish Libraries and Archives in Cracow During World
War II.?
This year?s program
is ?History, Memory, and Preservation? and it will explore the role of
libraries, archives, and museums in preserving the artifacts and
experiences surrounding September
11th.
Michèle Cloonan,
LHRT Chair and Chair, Department of Information Studies, UCLA will speak
about the roles of preservation and memory in creating the research
resources for historians.
Mark Roosa,
Director for Preservation, Library of Congress, will speak about LC's
efforts in preserving both artifacts and web sites related to 9/11.
Jim Gardner,
Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs, National Museum of American
History, will speak about
the
Smithsonian?s efforts to
document the events of 9/11.
Elisabeth Shields,
Research Specialist, Economic Development & Technology Ventures,
Georgia Tech, will speak about the challenges of gathering information
about a crisis in the midst of it and of preserving information about
decision making processes, in her talk ? Learning From Chaos: Special
Libraries in the aftermath of 9/11.?
