CONSERVATOR

**This is a two year appointment with the possibility of an
extension.**


The MIT Libraries seek an experienced conservator for a new special
collections conservation program (rare books, archives and manuscripts)
within Preservation Services.  A new conservation laboratory will be
completed in Fall 2002.  Initial responsibilities will include
contributing to program planning with the Preservation Services
Librarian, librarians and archivists; conservation laboratory set-up; and
program implementation.  Ongoing responsibilities: conservation
treatments for books and paper-based materials, assisted by a
conservation technician; collaborating with librarians and archivists to
assess conservation needs, setting priorities and planning treatments;
providing condition reports, treatment documentation and statistics;
preparing selected materials for on-site digital scanning; laboratory
maintenance; managing outsourced conservation projects; and assisting in
presenting the conservation program to staff and visitor groups. 
Participating in disaster preparedness and response. 

Qualifications:  Required - graduate degree in
conservation or comparable education and training; 2-4 years of
professional conservation experience with demonstrated ability to perform
complex treatments for rare books and unique paper-based materials;
working knowledge of chemistry and materials science; ability to plan,
organize and prioritize; strong training skills; excellent oral and
written communication skills.  Preferred - experience working
collaboratively in a research library.  Candidates who are
interviewed will be asked to present a portfolio of recent conservation
treatments.   

Hiring Salary:  Commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
