DISCUSSION GROUPFeaturing Nancy Gwinn, Director, Smithsonian Institution
LibrariesSaturday January 25th, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.Pennsylvania Convention
Center, Room 102-A [PRE]SERVING TWO MASTERS?Are you
microfilming and digitizing the same material? Are you wondering
ifboth will always be necessary? Thinking of digitizing only but
wondering ifit's safe? Some institutions have decided that the
creation of digitalfiles is a valid preservation option, making it no longer
necessary tocreate analog microfilm backups; some would like to provide
digital accesswithout abandoning microforms; others insist that digitization
is only anaccess medium and continue to microfilm research materials for
preservationpurposes. Is it now possible to declare that a
high-quality digital file isa preservation master? If so, why?
If not, why not? What's your currentposition on these issues?
Please join Nancy Gwinn, Director, SmithsonianInstitution Libraries, in open
discussion about these reformatting issuesat the Midwinter ALA/ALCTS PARS
Reformatting Discussion Group session onSaturday, January 25th, from 2 p.m.
to 4 p.m. in the Pennsylvania ConventionCenter, Room 102-A. For
