The University of Virginia Library is seeking an experienced
archivist or librarian to carry out a comprehensive collections
preservation and processing planning survey of its Special
Collections. The two-year project (funded by The Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation) based on a model developed at the Pennsylvania Historical
Society will undertake a comprehensive survey of Special Collections'
manuscripts and archives holdings in order to formulate a long-range
plan. The survey will use qualitative and quantitative measures to
rank each collection's research value as well as the collection's
intellectual access, physical access, housing, and condition. These
data will in turn help determine priorities for cataloging and
preservation to be outlined in a Collections Preservation and
Processing Plan.

Environment: The University Library system consists of eleven
libraries, with independent libraries for health sciences, law and
business. The libraries serve 12,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate
students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The Special Collections
Department administers over 13 million manuscripts, nearly 300,000
rare books, as well as a large University archive, significant
collections of maps, broadsides, photographs, and ephemera, etc.
Construction of the Mary and David Harrison Institute for American
History, Literature and Culture and the Albert and Shirley Small
Special Collections Library is underway. The Institute and Library,
which will open to the public in late 2004, will provide reader
services and shelving for the University's world renowned Special
Collections, studies for visiting scholars, seminar rooms and a
spacious exhibition gallery.
Job Description: The Project Coordinator reports to the Head of
Special Collections Technical Services and works closely with the
Director of Special Collections. The Project Coordinator: supervises
one state-classified library staff member and five to ten student
assistants; implements project methodology and develops and
implements project tracking and quality-control procedures;
establishes data-gathering tools and trains staff and students in
their use; monitors progress on a monthly basis to assure that
project meets all established deadlines; develops and implements
database structure to receive data accumulated by staff and student
assistants; maintains database for the duration of the grant project
(two years) and assures that data will be encoded in a format that is
usable beyond the close of the project; works with project
consultants to document areas of past, present, and future subject
interest represented in the manuscripts and archives collections.
Required Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school,
or Masters degree in American History or Literature. Three to five
years experience working with manuscripts and/or archives. Knowledge
of standard manuscripts and archives description and access
standards, such as MARC records and Encoded Archival Description,
preferred. Knowledge of database software such as Filemaker Pro or
Microsoft Access preferred. Ability to work effectively in a
collaborative environment. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal
communications skills. Strong organizational skills. Commitment to
professional growth.
Salary and Benefits: Salary $45,000. General faculty status. The
University of Virginia offers excellent benefits, including 22 days
of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other optional retirement plans.
