[PADG:2196] RE: benchmarking outreach
Some recent Australian and UK preservation reviews are based on benchmarking
schemes that may be useful to review:
Artlab Australia, with the History Trust of South Australia and the State
Library of New South Wales. Development of a best practice model for
conservation and preservation assessment plans for cultural collections.

plans for cultural collections. Volume 2. Accessed July 30, 2002. (February
1999) (http://amol.org.au/craft/publications/hcc/best_practice_model.asp.
Bell, Nancy and Helen Lindsay. 2000. Benchmarks in collections care for UK
libraries. Library and information research report 55. UK: Library and

Collections: Proceedings of the National Preservation Office Annual
Conference 21 November 2000 British Library, 12-18. London: National

I hope this is helpful.

Subject: [PADG:2193] benchmarking outreach
Colleagues,
The Preservation Group at the University of Maryland Libraries has
created a "Marketing Plan" for preservation outreach. We have been
asked to include a piece about benchmarking to set goals and show
progress. One possible approach may be to take an annual survey of
damage that appears to be caused by poor care and handling versus normal
wear and tear. Perhaps we could set ourselves a goal of reducing the
percentage of damage from poor handling by 5% a year, or some other
number. However, I have not found literature on such benchmarking and
wonder if any of you have a model or suggestions that you would be
willing to share.
Thanks very much,
Yvonne
