I have been successful in limiting the
time conflicts between Discussion Groups and our program on Saturday,
June 26, "Help! I'm Damaged and Can't Circulate!", with many thanks to
Charles Wilt, ALCTS Executive Director. Two Discussion
Groups have been moved to the 4-6pm slot on that Saturday. The
Cooperative Preservation Program DG retains its location, just the time
changes. The Recording and Photographic Media DG changes both time and
location. It now will follow the Reformatting DG in the Peabody
Orlando in the 4-6 time slot. These changes will not appear in any of the printed materials. We're too far past deadlines and this is the best we could do at this point in time. I will be doing the scheduling next year and will build more communication into the pre-planning process to avoid major conflict problems. Please note that our All Committees Meeting on Monday morning (8-11am) overlaps with the ALCTS President's Program starting at 10:30am. This year's program is sure to be very interesting and I want to encourage Committees to conclude business in time to make the program if possible. Unfortunately, the Sheraton is not very near the Ritz-Carlton for an easy transition. I have included a synopsis of the program below as well as relevant Discussion Groups from ACRL and LAMA that PADGers have expressed interest in. I also found a GLBT Round Table program with a preservation interest for those of you staying on Monday afternoon. I look forward to seeing you all in Orlando! Cultural memory resides not only in the products of civilization (such as books or art), but also myriad communication channels and processes. Stewart Brand's Clock of the Long Now depicts the increasingly complex task of preserving cultural memory in an era with a "pathologically short attention span" that may compromise a long-term perspective. In a time when information permanence is increasingly in question, how do we shape and sustain the legacy of our culture? And where do libraries fit in this process? The program will explore the dimensions of cultural memory as well as the challenges libraries face in preserving the artifacts and processes of contemporary life for the future. Copies of Stewart Brand's Clock of the Long Now are being provided through the generosity of Basic Books. Speakers: Douglas Greenberg, William Ivey, and Abby Smith bring rich perspectives on both the practical and policy aspects of preservation for the long term.
