| NEDCC Offers Fall Preservation Workshop Series  The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) 
announces its fall series of one-day preservation workshops in association with 
the Bay State Historical League, the Essex National Heritage Commission, and the 
Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System. This series is supported in 
part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.   Five workshops will be taught by NEDCC 
staff at NEDCC?s Andover, Massachusetts, facility. A special sixth workshop on 
grant writing will be held at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington, 
Massachusetts.Getting Started with Preservation: Planning a Practical ProgramTuesday, 
September 21 Helps participants better 
understand preservation problems that they are likely to encounter at their 
institutions. Explores the critical role of the environment and storage and 
handling procedures that can extend the life expectancy of collections. Includes 
a ?virtual survey? of an actual site in an exercise to develop an action 
plan.   Basic Book RepairThursday, September 30Offers information about 
managing a book repair program and provides hands-on experience in basic book- 
and paper-repair techniques for general library collections. Discusses the place 
of book repair within a larger preservation program, selection and treatment 
decision-making, appropriate materials for book repair, and setting up in-house

Lexington:Writing Grant Proposals for Preservation and Digitization ProjectsWednesday, 
October 6Guest speaker Tom Clareson 
of OCLC Online Computer Library Center provides a national perspective on 
funding for preservation and building digital collections. Teaches participants 
how to establish a grants program, identify potential funders, and develop 
proposals for state, local, and foundation funding sources. Includes hands-on 
exercises, tips for writing competitive applications, and a panel discussion 
with funders and reviewers. Held at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington, 
MA.   Identification 
and Care of Photographs Thursday, 
October 21 Focuses on the 
identification of historical photographic prints, the deterioration problems 
typical of each type, low-cost preservation strategies, and practical storage 
solutions. Participants may bring in examples for 
discussion.   Preservation of ScrapbooksTuesday, November 2Examines the range of 
preservation challenges that scrapbooks and albums present and possible 
solutions for their care, as well as selection and preparation for microfilming. 
Participants may bring in examples for discussion.   Children?s Book RepairTuesday, November 9Discusses the construction 
of children?s books and the equipment and supplies needed to repair them. 
Hands-on exercises explore basic repairs to a range of children?s book
