VCU Libraries Preservation Dept.
Title: Library Specialist II
Position Type: Full-time classified
Position Number: 51290
Description: Works directly with Dept Head to create and manage the VCU 
Libraries Digital Archives. Plans to preserve and make accessible 
library and campus resources, while managing traditional library bindery 
operations. The newly created unit will transform theses and 
dissertations, historical publications, and other scholarly resources 
from text, sound, and image to digital format. Investigates ongoing 
research projects and develops new ones. Trains and assists others in 
creating digital objects. Designs and creates web pages, prepares 
exhibits, performs quality assurance tasks, applies relevant standards 
and best practices. Writes procedures and trains staff. Supervises two 
full-time classified positions.
Qualifications: College degree strongly preferred. At least two years 
library experience, preferably in an academic library. Strongly prefer 
previous experience in preserving or evaluating library materials. 
Experience working independently and problem solving. Experience with 
managing digital files and compiling statistics. Experience with 
computer software applications and web page design. Experience with 
supervising staff in a team environment. Excellent verbal and written 
English communication skills.
Environment: Library Specialist II is the highest paraprofessional level 
in the VCU Libraries. Office is located in James Branch Cabell Library, 
VCU Monroe Park Campus. Hours are Mon-Fri and can be flexible.

and a variety of manuscript, film, video, sound, and book art 
collections. Together, the James Branch Cabell Library (Monroe Park 
Campus) and the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences (VCU 
Medical Center) employ 41 professionals and 81 support staff and have an 
annual budget of $11.4 million. The VCU Libraries is a Resource Library 
in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and a member of the 
Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, SPARC, CNI, BioMed 
Central, and the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), a statewide 
networking consortium for shared access to electronic and print 
resources. The VCU Libraries uses ALEPH 500, developed by Ex Libris 
Inc., as its next-generation integrated library system to enhance access 
to the Libraries collections and services. We will be implementing v16 
in the next month or two.
The Monroe Park Campus is located in Richmond's Fan District, a large, 
residential neighborhood of townhouses, shops, and cafes. This campus is 
home to the School of the Arts, the College of Humanities and Sciences, 
and the Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Social Work. 
The School of Social Work also offers the Masters of Social Work at the 
NoVa Campus in Alexandria, Virginia. In addition, VCU’s Qatar campus in 
the Middle East offers degree programs through the School of the Arts.
