[PADG:311] Yale preservation positions
Hello,
Yale is accepting applications for two positions in
preservation. The first is the Head of Collections Care. This
is a full-time, permanent position. The second position is a
part-time, two year position in the Medical library, Preservation
Coordinator.
I will be at ALA mid-winter and happy to talk to anyone interested
in these positions.

The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 11 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE
who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of
staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books
and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,

building and various automation projects that include network access to

COLLECTIONS CARE
Yale University Library's Collections Care is one unit within the
Preservation Department and is responsible for the care and repair of all
circulating collections including reference materials. In addition,
Collections Care includes monograph commercial binding and a
stack-cleaning project. Collections Care staff consult and provide
leadership Library-wide on conservation issues such as the safe care and
handling of circulating collections, emergency response and recovery, and
provides information to the public on conservation practices at Yale
University Library. The Head of Collections Care serves as a member of
the Preservation Management Team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Head, Preservation Department and Chief
Preservation Officer the Head of Collections Care plans and directs the
activities including the development, implementation and/or
administration of policies and procedures governing the preservation and
conservation of circulating and open stack collections. In order to do
this effectively, it is expected that the successful candidate will work
with librarians in setting treatment priorities for circulating and open
stack collections and advise library staff on preservation principles and
practices; as well as establish selection guidelines, standards, and
production levels for Collections Care staff, including training,
monitoring workflow, sorting, and documentation. Other responsibilities
of the Head of Collections Care include tracking statistics and inventory
control as well as managing the Collections Care budget which includes
the commercial binding budget.
The Head of Collections Care participates actively in the Library's
management, assessment, training, and development programs; contributes
to implementing the mission of the Library; serves on Library and
University committees as appropriate; and is active professionally. The
Head of Collections Care maintains professional affiliations in
appropriate organizations and keeps abreast of the latest developments in
conservation principles, techniques, and procedures
QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Conservation, Materials Science, Library Science
(ALA-accredited program), or related field, and four years conservation
experience in a research library; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. Comprehensive knowledge of the organization and
administrative policies and procedures of libraries and archives.
Advanced knowledge of chemistry and book history, conservation
principles, techniques and procedures, as relating to library materials.
Well developed organizational, research, and analytical skills. Excellent
teaching and supervisory skills with experience supervising technical
and/or professional staff. Excellent oral and written communication
skills. Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently and
with others.

HARVEY CUSHING/JOHN HAY WHITNEY MEDICAL LIBRARY
The Harvey Cushing / John Hay Whitney Medical Library, with a
collection of 400,000 volumes and a wide range of state-of the art
electronic services, serves the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health,
Nursing, the Yale-New Haven Hospital and other affiliated institutions of
the Yale-New Haven Medical Center. Library staff work together as a team
to provide responsive and effective information support to the Medical
Center's missions of research, education, and patient care. There is a
continuing effort to use technology fully to facilitate access to
information from library, campus, or remote locations.
THE PRESERVATION DEPARTMENT
Yale University Library's Preservation Department, started in 1971,
is one of the oldest in the country. It has strong administrative
support and has played a major role in the development of the
preservation field. The department consists of units covering
special collections conservation, collections care and reformatting with
system wide responsibilities for the treatment of rare and special
collections materials and circulating materials, mass deacidification,
microfilming, preservation photocopying, staff and user-education and
consultation on wide variety of preservation concerns.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Historical Medical Librarian and in
coordination with the Head of the Preservation Department coordinates all
preservation activities within the Historical Medical Collection and the
general collections of the Medical Library including, but not restricted
to: developing priorities, contacts with approved vendors, and
supervising volunteers and/or students. The Preservation
Coordinator will develop and implement a book cleaning project; research
& develop appropriate storage for objects and oversize volumes; work
with the Preservation Department's Conservation Lab to develop and
implement a basic care and repair program for the historical collection;
and develop and implement a protective enclosures program for the
collection.
Working with the Chief Conservator and the Historical Medical Librarian
the Preservation Coordinator is expected to develop treatment priorities
for the Historical Medical collection.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Conservation, Materials Science or related field,
and two years preservation experience; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. Advanced knowledge of conservation
principles, techniques and procedures as relating to wide variety of
materials and demonstrated through previous relevant experience in a
research or academic institution; knowledge of the organization and
administrative policies and procedures of libraries and archives;
excellent teaching and supervisory skills and strong computer
skills. The position also requires strong communication and
analytical skills, the ability to work independently and with others, and
to excel in a dynamic team environment, as well as well-developed
organizational, research, and analytical skills.
