Hello,
My apologies for cross postings. We have two positions open
in preservation. The first is actually a re-posting of an earlier
position. This is the Preservation Coordinator position at the Yale
Medical Library. The position is now full time for 24 months from
date of hire.
The second position is a Paper Conservator for the Beinecke
collections of flat paper which has the full range of manuscripts to art
on paper to early photographs.

HARVEY CUSHING/JOHN HAY WHITNEY MEDICAL LIBRARY
The Harvey Cushing / John Hay Whitney Medical Library, with a
collection of 400,000 volumes and a wide range of state-of the art
electronic services, serves the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health,
Nursing, the Yale-New Haven Hospital and other affiliated institutions of
the Yale-New Haven Medical Center. Library staff work together as a team
to provide responsive and effective information support to the Medical
Center's missions of research, education, and patient care. There is a
continuing effort to use technology fully to facilitate access to
information from library, campus, or remote locations.
THE PRESERVATION DEPARTMENT
Yale University Library's Preservation Department, started in 1971,
is one of the oldest in the country. It has strong administrative
support and has played a major role in the development of the
preservation field. The department consists of units covering
special collections conservation, collections care and reformatting with
system wide responsibilities for the treatment of rare and special
collections materials and circulating materials, mass deacidification,
microfilming, preservation photocopying, staff and user-education and
consultation on wide variety of preservation concerns.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Historical Medical Librarian and in
coordination with the Head of the Preservation Department coordinates all
preservation activities within the Historical Medical Collection and the
general collections of the Medical Library including, but not restricted
to: developing priorities, contacts with approved vendors, and
supervising volunteers and/or students. The Preservation
Coordinator will develop and implement a book cleaning project; research
& develop appropriate storage for objects and oversize volumes; work
with the Preservation Department's Conservation Lab to develop and
implement a basic care and repair program for the historical collection;
develop and implement a protective enclosures program for the collection;
and assist in maintaining the emergency response plan and responds to
emergencies as needed. Working with the Chief Conservator and the
Historical Medical Librarian the Preservation Coordinator is expected to
develop treatment priorities for the Historical Medical collection; and
assist in staffing the Historical Library office when other staff is
unavailable.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Conservation, Materials Science or related field,
and two years preservation experience; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. Advanced knowledge of conservation
principles, techniques and procedures as relating to wide variety of
materials and demonstrated through previous relevant experience in a
research or academic institution; knowledge of the organization and
administrative policies and procedures of libraries and archives;
excellent teaching and supervisory skills and strong computer
skills. The position also requires strong communication and
analytical skills, the ability to work independently and with others, and
to excel in a dynamic team environment, as well as well-developed
organizational, research, and analytical skills.

BEINECKE RARE BOOK and MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY
The Beinecke
Library, one of the world's largest buildings devoted entirely to rare
books and manuscripts, is Yale's principal repository for literary
archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. The Beinecke collections are
internationally known and heavily used by scholars from around the world.
In addition to its distinguished general collections, the Beinecke
Library houses outstanding special collections devoted to American
literature, German literature, Western Americana, and the Osborn
Collection, noted for its British literary and historical manuscripts.

CONSERVATION LABORATORY
The Yale University Library's Conservation Laboratory is one unit
within the Preservation Department and is responsible for item level
treatment and housing of rare and special materials. In addition to
treatment, the lab provides support for exhibits and consults and
provides leadership Library-wide on conservation issues such as the safe
care and handling of non-circulating collections, emergency response and
recovery, and provides information to the public on conservation
practices at Yale University Library.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general direction of the Yale University Library's Chief
Conservator, the Paper Conservator plans and performs conservation
treatment on the full range of materials found in the Beinecke Rare Book
Library; assists in planning strategies for collection care working with
the Chief Conservator and when appropriate the Collections Care
Librarian; recommends proper housing and storing of collections; assists
in the teaching of conservation techniques and methods; assists in the
response to emergencies as needed; and may be responsible for the
conservation of photographic collections.
The paper conservator participates actively in the Library's management,
assessment, training, and development programs; contributes to
implementing the mission of the Library; serves on Library and University
committees as appropriate; and is active professionally. The Paper
Conservator maintains professional affiliations in appropriate
organizations and keeps abreast of the latest developments in
conservation principles, techniques, and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Conservation, Materials Science, Library Science
(ALA-accredited program), or related field, and minimum one year relevant
professional conservation experience; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. Demonstrated professional accomplishments and a
minimum of two years of experience and accomplishments for appointment at
the Conservator II. Professional accomplishments demonstrated through a
portfolio of conservation treatment work in the area of library and
archival materials. Thorough knowledge of conservation principles for a
wide variety of materials preservation, and of conservation techniques
and procedures, as demonstrated through previous relevant experience in a
research or academic institution. Strong communication and analytical
skills; the ability to work independently and with others; the ability to
excel in a dynamic team environment; strong computer skills.
Knowledge of photographic chemistry, materials, history and conservation
techniques is desirable. Thorough knowledge of chemistry and book history
and history of library materials in general.
