[PADG:399] [Fwd: ALCTS at the 2005 ALA Annual Conference]]

Dear ALCTS Member,

ALCTS has once again scheduled great events for the ALA Annual
Conference in June in Chicago. From the pre-conferences to the
President's Program, ALCTS quality programming covers the hot topics in
today's library community. So join your fellow ALCTS members by
attending these great events.

The ALCTS President's Program features Michael Hawley of MIT Monday, June 27, 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m.

Librarians, Learning and Creativity: A Boundary-Breaking Perspective

ALCTS is proud to present the recipient of the first Jack Kilby Award
for Innovation in Science--Michael Hawley--as featured speaker for the
2005 President's Program. Dr. Hawley, Director of Special Projects at
MIT and a faculty member at the Media Lab, is an authority on digital
media and its social and business applications and implications. This
extraordinary innovator, educator, and explorer is also the founder of
Friendly Planet--a nonprofit company dedicated to educating children in
developing countries; founder and director both of MIT's Toys of
Tomorrow and Things That Think projects; a first prize winner in the Van
Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs; a
one-time Duncan Yo-Yo champion; a luge racer and member of the US
Bobsled Federation. He has done cutting edge research at Bell
Laboratories, IRCAM at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Lucasfilm Ltd. and
NeXT Computer Inc. He holds the Guinness record for the World's Largest
Published Book, Bhutan: A Visual Odyssey across the Last Himalayan
Kingdom. The book, which measures 5 x 7 feet and weighs 133 pounds,
offers a breathtaking view of an astonishingly beautiful and remote
region of the world and the people who inhabit it. A master of creative
leadership in using technology to advance the human condition, Hawley
will address ALCTS President's Program participants on the future of
libraries in a digital age. Following Hawley, Karen Calhoun, Associate
University Librarian for Technical Services at Cornell University, will
offer observations about the changing context for being a librarian in
the interconnected world of the Web, in which self-sufficient
information seekers move well beyond library collections in pursuit of
what they need.

ALCTS UNVEILS PAY-BY-THE-DAY PRE-CONFERENCES

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS)
invites you to explore the richness of its pre-conferences with a
pay-by-the-day registration. Pay-by-the-day allows attendees to select
the half-day sessions that best fit their interests. Attend a morning
session on preservation and the afternoon on writing for publication. Do library binding in the morning and e-resources management in the
afternoon. Do name and title authority both days. Attend one day or
both days (at a reduced rate). So instead of registering for a specific
pre-conference you register for the day and attend what you want.

The days include 3 morning sessions, and 3 afternoon sessions. Attend any morning session and any afternoon session - you do not have
to attend morning and afternoon sessions from the same topic.

Take a look at what's being offered, then sign up while there's still
space!!

Thursday Pre-conference June 23, 2005, 8:30 am - 5:30 pm Event Code: AC1

Writing for Publication: Demystifying the Process This pre-conference will help attendees to choose a suitable medium,
work out a publication time-line, understand copyright and how to
negotiate a publication contract. Questions of style, grammar, working
with an editor and reviewing page proofs will be addressed.

Effective Name and Title Authority This two-day pre-conference will present the full set of name and title
authority training materials, which have been under development for the
past two years by the CCS/PCC Task Force to Develop Name and Title
Authority Training. It will cover all facets of name and title
authority work, including an introduction to authority work, basic
resources used in authority work, and specific instruction on authority
work for personal names, corporate names, meeting names, geographic
names, and uniform titles. Attending all sessions in sequence is recommended.

Preservation Assessment: Understanding Problems and Developing Real
Solutions (Morning Only) Understand the nature and scope of preservation problems and take
practical steps towards improving the condition of their collections.
Learn the mechanics of carrying out a condition survey, how condition
information relates to preservation problems, and be provided with
guidance towards tangible and cost effective improvements. Examples from
studies conducted at a variety of libraries will be presented and ample
time will be allowed for discussion.

Licensing of E-Resources: A Refresher Workshop (Afternoon Only) Many folks have been reviewing and revising license agreements for
several years now, but still feel uneasy about their skills. This
session will quickly review the key elements of license review, identify
the best resources available for help with this process, and provide a
forum for questions and answers related to your own experience.

Friday Pre-conference June 24, 2005, 8:30 am - 5:30 pm Event Code: AC2

Effective Name and Title Authority (See description above) Attending all sessions in sequence is recommended.

Maximizing Your Binding Budget Library binding is a cost-effective strategy for extending the life of
high-use collections, especially as publishing shifts toward more
soft-cover volumes. Librarians are often faced with having to make a
strong case to their administrations about the value of library binding.
Participants will leave with the tools they need to make and implement
informed library binding decisions.

Preservation of Library Collections: An Introduction (Morning Only) This pre-conference focuses on the common need for preservation and
collections maintenance within almost all institutions. More
importantly, it aims to provide an introduction to the topic for new
professionals/managers that suddenly find themselves in a position with
responsibility for managing and preserving their library's collections. Speaker: Thomas Teper.

Electronic Resources Management Systems: Opening a Can of ERMS
(Afternoon Only) This pre-conference will be a half-day event with three hour-long
sessions: an introduction to the history and issues of electronic resources
management; a market overview of existing and developing products;
reports from libraries that have implemented a system, emphasizing
implementation scenarios rather than commercial products; e.g. buying a
system, migrating from an in-house system to a commercial one, and using
a product in parallel with a different ILS.

One-Day Fees Thursday or Friday Advance: ALCTS member: $185; ALA member: $225; Non-Member: $265;
Student/Retired member: $95. Onsite: ALCTS member: $225; ALA member:
