Duties & Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Preservation Cataloger and Projects
Manager, the Mellon Project Cataloger for Photographs participates in a
5-year project to conserve, catalog, and digitize photographs from the
Harvard University collections. Creates original descriptive records for
photographs in a broad range of subject areas, from a variety of Harvard
repositories, using OLIVIA (Harvard's image cataloging system) and
following locally established guidelines. Creates authority records
according to the requirements of each collection. Links catalog records
to digital images. Participates in planning for photograph cataloging
initiatives, working closely with the Preservation Cataloger and Projects
Manager and with librarians and curators in collections repositories.
Collaborates with catalogers in the Weissman Preservation Center and in
each repository to identify local requirements and to determine
appropriate levels of description. Keeps current with changes to
Harvard's image-cataloging system and policies for photograph cataloging.
Serves a key role in documenting photograph cataloging procedures and in
maintaining statistical reports. Keeps the Preservation Cataloger, and
Weissman Strategic Planning Group, informed of developments and
issues.
The program, a major initiative, is supported in part by the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation. The cataloger is based in the Weissman Preservation
Center but may in some cases work on site in various locations at the
University. Position will participate in the Harvard University Library's
newly established program to preserve and make accessible to a worldwide
audience Harvard's holdings of more than 7.5 million photographs.
Required Education, Experience, Skills
Required: MS in library science or equiv. plus a min. of two yrs. of
exp. cataloging photographs. Solid working knowledge of descriptive
guidelines and standards such as Graphic Materials; basic understanding
of use of controlled vocabularies such as name authority files and
subject thesauri; solid working knowledge of basic photographic
processes, history, & formats; reading knowledge of at least one
foreign language; ability to analyze and solve cataloging problems and
analyze procedures and workflow. Excellent skills in oral and written
English; demonstrated attention to detail; ability to establish
priorities, meet deadlines, and achieve goals. Must be flexible and able
to work collaboratively with others.
Desired experience: Experience with OLIVIA; experience cataloging
archival materials; familiarity with encoding schemes such as MARC21,
MODS, Dublin Core, or EAD; working knowledge with one or more languages
in addition to English.
