Title: Senior Library Associate-Conservation
Wellesley College invites applications for the position of Sr. Library
Associate/Conservation (Collections Conservator). This position manages
the operation of the Library's spacious and well-equipped Conservation
Facility and is responsible for: treating a full range of materials from
the 18th-20th centuries in the circulating collections; hiring, training
and supervising 10-15 student workers; specifying treatments and
inspecting completed work; and supporting a wide array of program
activities including commercial binding, preservation photocopying,
digital imaging, staff and user education, disaster preparedness and mass
deacidification. The Sr. Library Associate reports to the Manager of the
Library Collection Management Group.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; advanced degree
in library or archives collections conservation preferred. Minimum one
year prior experience in bookbinding or book conservation work required;
significant collections conservation experience in a library setting
preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in principles and
techniques employed in the conservation and preservation of library
materials. Demonstrated ability and skill to work on a variety of library
materials, and in performing a variety of book and paper repair and
conservation techniques. Previous experience in treatment decisionmaking
and staff training and supervision required. Experience or strong interest
in library preservation and in the history, art, chemistry, history of the
book, bookbinding structure or library science preferred. Must be able to
work in a culturally diverse environment.
