of Maryland Libraries serve
the College Park Campus, flagship of
the 13-member University
System of Maryland.
As a the largest university library in the Washington DC-Baltimore
area, The UM
Libraries have important research collections, including significant
audiovisual holdings such as those in the Broadcasting Archives, the
International
Piano Archives at Maryland, the University Archives, and Special
Collections in
the Performing Arts. The newly created
position of Audiovisual Archivist represents an opportunity to grow a
programmatic approach to audiovisual reformatting, access, and
preservation,
working within a community of archivists, curators, nonprint
specialists, and
preservation professionals.
The
University of Maryland Libraries is seeking qualified applicants for the
position of
Audiovisual Archivist. This position
reports primarily to the Head, Nonprint Media Services, and secondarily
to the
Curator, Archives & Manuscripts Department.
The position is within the Collection Management and Special
Collections
Division but includes responsibilities and involvement with audiovisual
holdings elsewhere in the UM Libraries.
The position also has responsibility to work with other
divisions
including coordinating digital projects with the head of the Digital
Collections and Research and preservation planning and projects with
the head
of Preservation. The AV Archivist will
be responsible for leadership in planning and implementing a
reformatting,
access, and preservation plan for the audiovisual holdings of the UM
Libraries. The position will also
participate in the work of an audiovisual team in Hornbake Library; and
provide
advice and direct support to curators in making audiovisual holdings
more
readily accessible to library users and in duplicating audiovisual
materials
for users.
Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library
or
information science or equivalent combination of degrees and
experience, with
formal training in archival theory, preservation, and management or
archival
certification. Formal classroom or
workshop training in audiovisual archival work provided by academic
library
school programs and/or professional association organizations such as
SAA, ARSC
and AMIA. Minimum of two years of
relevant archival experience with media collections in an academic,
research,
or special library. Demonstrated
experience with preservation and reformatting of audiovisual materials,
particularly with film and video collections.
Professional familiarity with current trends in archival
preservation as
it relates to audiovisual holdings.
Familiarity with issues surrounding the creation and management
of
digital objects in sound and visual formats.
Ability to manage a broad variety of tasks in response to
varying time
pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints. Ability to maintain a systematic perspective;
to actively participate in a team-based organization. Ability
to take direction as well as provide
direction and motivation to staff, student assistants, and volunteers. Evidence of strong service orientation; an
ability to anticipate audiovisual access, reformatting, and
preservation needs
and seek ways of providing satisfactory solutions. Ability
to interact effectively with a broad
variety of staff within and outside Hornbake Library. Excellent
interpersonal skills; ability to
communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, both orally and in
writing,
with all persons potentially affected by the scope of the work. Preferred:
Evidence of formal technical training in preservation and reformatting
of
audiovisual materials. Track record of
successful grant applications highly desired.
