[PADG:786] Position at Duke Univ: AUL for Collections Services
Associate University Librarian and Director of Collections Services
Reporting to the University Librarian/Vice-Provost for Library
Affairs, the AUL/Director of Collections Services provides leadership
for all activities related to collections for the Duke University
Libraries, including print and digital collection building,
acquisitions, cataloging and metadata creation, serials management,
electronic resources licensing, and preservation. S/He manages,
allocates and monitors a $9M appropriated budget as well as numerous
restricted and endowed funds. In close consultation with faculty and
with the libraries’ subject librarians, s/he guides the transition to
integrated and complementary print and digital collections in support
of teaching, learning, and research and develops innovative
approaches to collection assessment and management. As a member of
the library’s Executive Group, s/he participates in general
administrative decision-making and library management.
Responsibilities
· Leads, administers, and coordinates collection
development activities performed by a decentralized staff of 35
subject librarians.
· Supervises five departments: Collection Development;
International and Area Studies; Acquisitions; Cataloging; and
Preservation.
· Serves as the library’s primary spokesperson regarding
collections to faculty, students, alumni and administrators, and
forges collaborations with academic departments and programs.
· Oversees the work of the Digital Collections Council and
guides the development of digital collection-building initiatives.
· Works cooperatively and collaboratively with the
Director, Rare Book, Manuscript and Special Collections Library
(RBMSCL) to ensure coordination of collection priorities and
associated funding.
· Participates in recruiting and hiring librarians with
collection development responsibilities; oversees their training
and evaluation.
· Oversees allocation and use of $9M materials budget and
additional endowments and restricted funds.
· Prepares reports for the university administration for a
variety of purposes, including annual collections budget requests,
external reviews of departments and programs, and library impact
statements concerning proposed new degree and certificate
programs.
· Encourages attention to scholarly communication issues
within the library and on campus, working closely with the
Scholarly Communication Officer.
· Promotes cooperative collection development and planning
with the libraries of Duke’s professional schools (Fuqua School of
Business, Divinity, Law, and Medical Center).
· Participates in overall system-wide planning, policy
development, resource allocation, and personnel management as a
member of the library’s Executive Group.
· Fosters professional development of librarians and staff
to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing environment.
· Participates in library fund raising and stewardship.
· Represents the collections and technical services
interests of the Duke Libraries in regional consortia (Triangle
Research Libraries Network and the Association of Southeast
Research Libraries), national forums and international
initiatives.
· Undertakes special projects as needed and assigned.
Qualifications
It is the expectation that all Perkins Library System staff members

EDUCATION:
Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or an
equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
Preferred: Ph.D.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible
experience related to collection services in an academic research
environment and a minimum of five years of successful management and
supervisory experience, at least three of which should be as Head of
a large department, or equivalent; demonstrated management and
supervisory skills; broad knowledge of the library’s role in
instruction and research; proven experience working closely and
frequently with faculty; strong leadership, interpersonal and oral
and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to analyze
work processes and introduce appropriate technological solutions for
greater efficiency of operations; ability to establish effective
working relationships campus-wide in a collaborative and
entrepreneurial environment; a record of significant professional
activity; awareness of national and international issues and trends
in collection development, technical services and/or preservation;
and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rapidly
changing environment..
Preferred: Reading knowledge of one or more languages beyond English;
working knowledge of computer-based technology in libraries,
including the use of an integrated library system; successful record
with fundraising efforts; significant participation in professional
associations and/or relevant publications demonstrating leadership in
library, university, national and international programs and
initiatives; Experience working in a consortial environment;
university teaching experience; successful record of developing and
initiating new programs.
Salary and Benefits
Salary dependent on qualifications and experience; anticipated hiring
range of $88,000 – $105,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes
20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental,
disability and life insurance; retirement plan options; and
educational assistance and tuition grants.

The libraries of Duke University consist of the William R. Perkins
Library and its six branches on campus: Rare Book, Manuscript and
Special Collections, Biological and Environmental Sciences,
Chemistry, Engineering and Math-Physics, Lilly and Music; the library
at the Duke Marine Laboratory in Beaufort; and the independently
administered libraries of the professional schools: The Ford Library
at the Fuqua School of Business, Divinity School Library, Duke Law
