Here is a shorter version of the meeting minutes.
PARS Management Committee Report for Mid Winter - January 23, 2006
Interlibrary Loan Code Motion
The Committee reviewed the PADG discussion and vote of support for the
Motion to revise the national Interlibrary Loan Code and/or Supplement
to eliminate the use of pressure sensitive adhesives on Interlibrary
Loan books. The Committee moved, with one addition of text, to
recommend to PARS Executive Committee that the motion be approved and
forwarded to the ALCTS Board for endorsement and forwarding to RUSA.
Discussion Group Reports
PADG attendance was very positive. The 8-9 am breakout session format
was very successful and will be repeated at annual. The Management
Committee noted that hosting digital photos of the poster sessions on a
website might be of use to those who are not able to attend and would
also provide a means to encourage participation in the poster sessions.
Cooperative Strategies: The co-chairs reported a very successful
session. A program idea for 2007 was presented which would provide an
introduction to the importance of disaster planning for
non-preservation librarians, with a second part presenting a disaster
plan tool. The idea seemed very timely in relation to Hurricane Katrina
and the results of the Heritage Health Index.
Digital Preservation: Managing Digital Objects: There was a very solid
turnout at the first meeting of this new DG. There was an opportunity
to provide input for the new PARS Task Force which is preparing a
statement on digital preservation for ALA. A list of future discussion
topic was identified.
Publication Updates:
The Cost Study Task Force publication will be published by ALA in
February.
The publication is entitled “The Preservation Manager’s Guide to Cost
Analysis.”
“What Happens When Your Library Becomes A Crime Scene” publication
There has been some activity on this by the Task Force and the
Management Committee will review this for further development. It was
suggested that the publication might be better as an article rather
than a standalone publication.
There appears to be an interest in identifying which institutions have
mutual aid response pacts and sharing this information in some form. A
related idea was suggested by PPP for a publication that would present
mutual aid response planning with input from both a librarian and a
lawyer.
Program Updates
The Mold program is on schedule for New Orleans. Attendance is
expected to be high due to the recent disaster. The program is intended
to teach participants how to identify mold, prevent it, mitigate its
effects, and how to respond to a mold outbreak and prevent its
recurrence.
The “Hold On to the Memories” program may be deferred to 2008. This
program is intended to train public librarians to give local Preserving
Family Heirlooms workshops.
A request was received from the Reformatting Committee for
co-sponsorship of a program on digital preservation and digital
preservation technologies. Management Committee is receptive to the
idea and awaits further details.
Other Business
A question was raised about the relationship between ALA and other
organizations such as SAA that are involved in digitization
programming. (It was later clarified that Tom Clareson is on a joint
committee that is addressing this issue.)
Membership
Three Committee appointments are needed for next year. The Committee
will continue to add to the statement of activities for the newly
developed handout “Welcome to PARS.”
