[PADG:887] digital preservation
Hi,
Just to give a quick synopsis of the responses to my query of last
week. First, I did hear from about half a dozen folks. Most acknowledged
that they did not have a digital preservation program. Some as
preservation administrators were involved in some way in the development of
a program. One institution did have some type of centralized digital
repository but it was still in development and the preservation aspect of
it was totally in the hands of the systems folks.
Those of us working on the development of the digital preservation
programs all seem to be headed down the same path--committee or task force
to look at the needs, make recommendations on the shape and form of the
program and needed policies.
Thanks to everyone who got back to me.

Hi,
I have some questions related to digital preservation and how libraries
and universities are meeting the needs of preserving their electronic
collections. I know what appears in various articles but I'm looking for
the preservation administrators view of what is happening in their
institutions--what's the reality as you see it. I am not necessarily asking
about scanning operations or conversion of analog to digital, though that
may be part of the program. I am really interested in who is doing what to
and for the electronic collections be they created in house for whatever
purpose or purchased. Where is that happening and who is responsible for it?
Does your institution have a digital preservation program?
If so, what does that mean? What is that program--what are its
responsibilities and "realms of influence"?
Where does that program reside?
And is it:
part of the library preservation program,
related to but not a part of the library preservation program
though still within the library,
related to the library and its programs but at the broader
institution level?
How is the program staffed?
Thanks.
