Applications
METADATA STANDARDS AND APPLICATIONS - CALL FOR TRAINERS
The Library of Congress and the Association for Library Collections &
Technical Services (ALCTS) is seeking trainers for a new training
initiative.
BACKGROUND
In November 2000, the Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for
the New Millennium was held to bring together authorities in the cataloging
and metadata communities to discuss outstanding issues involving improved
discovery and access to Web resources. One resulting recommendation was the
development of training and continuing education to improve bibliographic
control of selected Web resources. The Cataloger's Learning Workshop (CLW)
has been established as a clearinghouse portal for cataloging and metadata
training.
'Metadata Standards and Applications' is one of several workshops developed
to support the goal of improving bibliographic control of Web resources.
Information about CLW is available at: http://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
'Metadata Standards and Applications' is a two-day workshop with the goal of
relating what catalogers already know about the traditional library world to
the metadata world, so that they can properly understand the extent of their
current knowledge and see how it can relate to a transition to new areas.
Topics covered include:
* Introduction to Digital Libraries
* What is Metadata?
* Storage and Retrieval Models
* Data Creation and Management Models
* Relationship Models
* Specific Metadata Standards and Applications Overview
A more detailed outline of the workshop is available at:
http://www.library.cornell.edu/cts/alcts/Outline-Course_2rev0509.doc
INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
The objective of the Instructor Development Seminar (IDS) is to develop
trainers to deliver 'Metadata Standards and Applications' in a classroom
setting. This one-day seminar will prepare participants to deliver the
course material and will outline the role of the trainer in the CLW
organizational framework.
The instructor seminar for this workshop will be held Saturday May 13th at
the American Library Association headquarters in Chicago. The first
offering of the course is May 11th & 12th and potential instructors are
encouraged to attend this offering. More information about workshop
registration is available at: http://www.ala.org/alcts/events/
SUPPORT FROM HOME INSTITUTION
The applicant must have the support of the home institution to participate.
Travel expenses to attend the IDS are not reimbursed by CLW. When leading a
workshop, instructors will receive travel expenses (and optionally an
honorarium) from the sponsoring organization.
REQUIREMENTS
* Knowledge of current cataloging rules and standards as they apply to
digital objects.
* Minimum two years experience in creating/implementing non-MARC metadata in
support of digital library applications.
* Current familiarity with a wide range of metadata-related standards,
syntaxes and models (such as Dublin Core, MODS, RDF, METS, ONIX, HTML, XML,
FRBR).
* Prior experience as a trainer in a classroom setting.
APPLICATION PROCESS
If you are interesested in becoming a trainer for this workshop, please
complete the application below and return to Steve Shadle
(shadle@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) by April 1, 2006. Applicants will be notified by
April 15th of their acceptance at the seminar and will be provided with
additional details at that time.
Thank you for your interest in serving as a trainer. It is through the
combined efforts of many individuals and institutions that a community of
knowledgeable metadata librarians can be developed. Questions about the
workshop or the seminar can be directed to Steve Shadle.
