Reformatting Discussion Group
ALA Annual 2006 – New Orleans
When: Saturday, June 24th
Time: 1:30pm - 3:30pm
Location: Ballroom 1 at the Wyndham Canal Place Hotel.
Agenda
1. Presentations:
Robert J. Strauss, Preservation Technologies
How Can Mass Deacidification Work in Tandem With Reformatting Strategies?
Russ Wilding, iArchives
Challenges in Reformatting: Making Century-Old Newspapers Available Online.
2. Open Discussion:
Are demands for reformatting being driven by preservation needs or
access needs or both? How can we create preservation strategies that
are both efficient and cost effective?
In a climate of limited library funding, how does your library decide
which materials to select for reformatting and digitizing and why? Is
there still a role for more traditional forms of reformatting such as
microfilm?
Is preservation of the original the predominant justification to
digitize? If not, what other considerations are taken into account?
Finally, how should we address the preservation and access needs of
oversized materials or ephemera that do not lend themselves easily to a
reformatting process?
