[PADG:1221] Archives Preservation Class Offering From SOLINET

SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to announce
there are still seats available in the following ARCHIVES PRESERVATION
class (please excuse cross-posting):

ARCHIVES PRESERVATION: HOLDINGS MAINTENANCE

Location: Regents University Library, Virginia Beach, VA
Date: October 31, 2006
Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Holdings maintenance, the basic preservation procedures incorporated
into arrangement and description duties, is recognized as a fundamental
component of archives preservation. It represents a practical approach
to preserving large groups of records housed in repositories and can
significantly benefit an institution, regardless of its size or scope.
The emphasis is on stabilizing materials (for example, by removing
damaging fasteners), re-housing, cleaning, flattening rolled or folded
documents, encapsulation, photocopying, and segregating fragile items.

Full descriptions and registration information for these classes are
posted on the SOLINET website
http://www.solinet.net/workshops/ws_details.cfm?doc_id=2996&WKSHPID=12AP
.

This one day class is designed for archives staff as a basic
introduction to preservation issues and the holdings maintenance
activities performed during arrangement and description.

For more information or to register, contact Vanessa Richardson at
